Board of Governors
The Governors bring a wealth of experience to the Board from their professional lives which encompasses education, marketing, accountancy, investments and charitable work. As unpaid volunteers, they give of their time freely to assist in every aspect of school life. Their prime responsibility is to determine the strategy and direction for Stonyhurst Penang and to ensure the continued evolution of the school.
Michael Sng
Michael Sng
Chair of the Board of Governors
Michael Sng is the Chair of the Board of Governors of Stonyhurst International School, Penang. Michael is a founding member of the Board of Governors of St. Joseph’s Institution International Singapore. Michael was elected as President of the SJI Old Boys’ Association for two terms and served on the Board of Governors of SJI for three terms. Michael graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts degree (majoring in Economics and Sociology).
John Browne
John Browne
John Browne is the current Headmaster of Stonyhurst College, UK, and previously Headmaster of St Aloysius College in Glasglow, Scotland. John is also a Governor of St John’s Beaumont, a Jesuit day and boarding preparatory school in Windsor. John has a postgraduate LLB from City University, London and a MBA.
Jeremy Cheam
Jeremy Cheam
Jeremy Cheam, an Old Stonyhurst (OS86) joined the Governing Body in 2019 and chairs the Marketing Committee. Jeremy received his early education in Singapore and St John’s Beaumont – the Jesuit preparatory boarding school near Windsor before continuing his education at Stonyhurst College in the UK. A graduate of the University of Cambridge, Jeremy is a Marketing, Media, Brand and Product innovator with 30 years of experience in both local and multinational corporations.

May Chew
May Chew joined the Governing Body in 2019. May has a strong finance background, with over 20 years of experience in the finance and investment industry. May has been with TAEL Partners since 2009 and is currently the country head of TAEL Partners in Vietnam, where she is responsible for overseeing TAEL’s investments in the country. Prior to TAEL, she was an Associate Director with AmInvestment Bank Bhd.
Gerard F. Robless
Gerard F. Robless
Gerard F. Robless joined the Governing Body in 2021. Gerard has worked extensively supporting charities and community groups in Singapore, Kuching and Penang. He was awarded the ‘Benemerenti Medal’ by Pope Francis for his work in reaching out to the most vulnerable groups in the society; feeding and providing shelter to the homeless and bringing joy to children of the urban poor through tuition and recreation. Gerard and his wife, Sue-Ann have three grown children in Australia and Singapore.
Datin Bharathi a/p Suppiah
Datin Bharathi a/p Suppiah
Datin Bharathi Suppiah joined the Governing Body in 2022. As the Deputy General Manager of Chief Minister of Penang Incorporated (CMI), she has been instrumental in the establishment of Stonyhurst International School in Penang. Datin Bharathi also serves on the Board of Governors of her alma mater, SMK Convent Green Lane.
Jonathan Lim
Jonathan Lim
Jonathan Lim joined the Governing Body in 2022, Jonathan received his primary education in S.R.K. Methodist Petaling Jaya and then continued his secondary education at S.M. La Salle Petaling Jaya; thereby fully appreciating the value of a “mission school” education. A graduate of the University of Cambridge, he has over 20 years of extensive experience in private equity, investment banking and corporate finance. Jonathan is based in Kuala Lumpur, having lived in Bangkok and Singapore in the earlier part of his career.
Fr Francis Lim, SJ
Fr Francis Lim, SJ
Fr Francis, a Malaysian, joined the Jesuits of Malaysia-Singapore Region in 2001, and was ordained a priest in 2012. He studied philosophy at Driyarkara School of Philosophy in Jakarta, and theology at Regis College which is the Jesuit School of Theology at the University of Toronto. Upon his ordination, he served as the Principal of St Joseph’s Private Secondary School, a diocesan-owned school in Kuching, Malaysia, from 2012 to 2021. He was appointed as the Socius to the Regional Superior in March 2022, and assumed office as the Regional Superior of the Malaysia-Singapore Region on 15 December 2022.
